My Own Oil Pastel Technique
Why Oil Pastel?
Historically, the oil pastel technique has been limited to artists who used it primarily for sketches or studio work. It has been an excluded and largely underexplored medium. However, I believe that oil pastel has the potential to be a superior medium for fine art and figurative painting.
In my work, I use the expression of oil painting technique using oil pastel crayons.
I employ a layering and finger rubbing technique on a rough wood surface, which provides a textured surface for the color to adhere to. My technique is drawing and painting at the same time and because it is a dry medium it offers the possibility of speeding up production times by not having to consider drying times. This gives me the freedom to abandon and return to the work whenever I want without having to worry about the palette drying out as traditionally happens in oil painting.
Through years of experimentation and exploration I was able to develop color combination, glaze and texturing techniques, discovering infinite possibilities. By employing this innovative technique, I am able to breathe new life into this classic medium and show its full potential as an artistic medium. My goal as an artist is to elevate the status of oil pastel, show its versatility and demonstrate that it is a medium with limitless possibilities in figurative painting.
